Facsimile editon published by H.M.S.O., 1989. Introduction by Lieut. Comm. J.A. Withers. After the end of the Second World War, Fregattenkapitan Gunter Hessler (a son-in-law of Donitz) was given free access to the war diaries and other primary sources of the German Navy to write an historical analysis of the German U-Boat offensive in the Atlantic. It was a wide ranging report covering general strategy, signals intelligence, tactics and weapons, written from a German perspective. It also investigated Allied counter-measures and the response of the U-Boat Command. This 3 volume work was written at the request of the Admiralty and was classified material, never available to the general public. This facsimile edition of the volumes is a valuable addition to the published history of the war, and contains information available nowhere else. Fine copy. Scarce.
